This year I had the absolute pleasure to meet with this pair of happy guys, Stan Bailey and Henry Small, the morning radio duo for 98.3 CIFM. I joined them on air
a couple of times, to talk about the creation of this painting.
The idea for this piece came about after donating artwork to the CFJC TV annual auction. In return of the donation, I received the opportunity to create a TV advert for my art. While in the TV studio I had the idea of creating a painting and showing the stages of the creation on screen. Only who should I paint!? Choosing Stan and Hank felt like the perfect solution, as they are well known in Kamloops, meaning a connection to the viewer when seeing the painting develop.
There were challenges involved in the process for this painting, physically, mentally and technically. The painting you see before you is the second version, as I felt the first was not of a standard I would be proud to show. The initial reference images I wished to use would need tweaking to create the desired final painting, from shots with Hank with eyes closed or of Stan being a little out of focus. Multiple shots were used to create the final painting, using the best elements of each to overcome the obstacles.
The second version came together beautifully and smoothly, after taking a break to re-assess the project.
Painted using an Iwata HP-AH airbrush with Createx acrylic on Canvas, sized 24×30 inches.
